Delivery Structure

Students must be at least 16 years of age to be able to participate in this course.

This Coxswain course is delivered in 2 ways:

 Blended Course Delivery – Online Plus 4 days Practical

Face to Face Course Delivery – 10 Days Class Room and Practical

Blended Course Delivery Detail

blended format i.e partly completed at home in your own time using an online training package and partly completed on our training vessels.

Once you have completed the online enrolment and paid the prescribed fee you will be able to register with a username and password that will provide the gateway to your online learning resources. These resources are available to you even after course completion for an unlimited time for your future reference

The online training package has assignments and assessments where resources are provided. There may be some extra research required by you for which you can conduct using the Australian Boating Manual which is also provided to you free of charge upon enrolment.

Each unit also has a practical component, these components are conducted as part of the AMPA (AMSA Mandated Practical Assessment) requirements which will be covered through out the course.

The total amount of practical days will be 4 days including AMPA. The AMSA application and finalisation and will be scheduled accordingly.

Face to Face Course Delivery Detail

10 days Monday to Friday class room learning and practical. Assignments and resource material is emailed via a zip file. Bring your own PC or bring printed assignments to class to complete. There may be scheduled homework if unable to complete in class room time.

It is expected that sea time meets AMSA requirements when completing the AMPA, however you have 12 months from the date you have completed the AMPA to acquire the required sea time.

Maritime Training School is not obligated to fulfil your sea time requirements.

The following form of sea service will be recognised as equivalent to the above sea service requirements if all other prerequisites for a Coxswain Grade 1 NC certificate of competency are met: • sea service on a commercial vessel ≥4.5m long while operating beyond sheltered waters within 5nm from the point of departure, shore base or aquaculture lease.

Endorsement

Coxswain Grade 1 NC Near Coastal Certificates of Competency issued prior to 1 July 2013 The holder of an existing certificate of competency issued by a state or territory marine safety agency prior to 1 July 2013 may apply to the National Regulator for the following endorsements provided the conditions are met. A current Coxswain Grade 1 NC (or equivalent existing state or territory certificate) can be endorsed to command a vessel on restricted offshore operations if the holder satisfies the following conditions:

Qualifying Sea Service and Task Books Sea Service

will be assessed using the National Standard for Commercial Vessels (NSCV) Part D, Crew Competencies. Please note that the applicant must accrue at least half of the qualifying sea service required for the certificate in the 5 years before the application. For further information on this document and access to additional information on qualifying sea service and task books please refer to the AMSA website www.amsa.gov.au

Final Assessment

Students are required to undertake a final assessment conducted by Maritime Training Schools AMPA approved assessor before being issued an interim certificate of competency which will allow them to operate immediately. The students application for a certificate of competency (AMSA form 426) upon course and AMPA completion will then be forwarded to AMSA for final approval. Upon AMSA approval, the student will be provided with the official certificate of competency. The criteria and competencies covered in a final assessment are included in the relevant tables of the ‘Skills and Knowledge required for NSCV Certificates of Competency Part D Crew Competencies’ document, which can be found on the AMSA website.

Eligibility Criteria – Coxswain Grade 1 NC

Be at least 16 years when the certificate is issued;

Provide evidence of sea service accrual in the form of: An application for a Qualifying Sea Service Assessment (AMSA form 771); or any of the following

Medical Fitness including Eye Sight Test AMSA Form

Certificate II – Coxswain Grade 1 issued by an AMSA approved training organisation;

HLTAID011 unit of competency Provide first aid or another certificate that the National Regulator considers equivalent;

Marine Radio Operators VHF Certificate of Proficiency (MROVCP) issued by the Australian Communications and Media Authority, or higher qualification, or an equivalent qualification approved by the National Regulator;

Pay fee/s.

You also will be asked to provide an application for a certificate of competency, proof of identity and two passport-style photographs taken in the previous six months.
