Navigation at Night Course

Navigation at night through the busy Sydney Harbour can be a very daunting task for the new boater or the inexperienced. A voyage at night is vastly different experience to that of a trip during daylight.

 

Responding to the needs of boaters Maritime Training School has designed a course that will give you the skills and confidence to navigate at night.

Function

To navigate at night we need to use all the tools available to us, these include GPS, Radar, AIS, Chartplotter, paper charts and compass, as part of our course you will get to use and understand all of the above aids.



The course is run on our 60’ Charter vessel, Silver Spirit, it is fully equipped with the above instruments and plenty of room to get our paper charts out to plot our course.

The course will consist of 1 hours work on the Marina and 2 hours underway navigating our way around the Harbour at night and 1 hour at anchor.

Course Cost

Cost of the course is $250.00 There is a discount via our voucher system for any students who completed their marine radio or boat licence course with Maritime Training School.

Tea coffee and finger food snacks will be supplied.

1730 Boarding time

* Introduction and induction

* Explanation of charts

* Plot our position by tri bearing fix

* Make voyage plan to Athol Bay

* Mark waypoints on plotter

* Introduction to AIS

* Calculate Distance, Speed and Time


1830 Depart berth

* Monitor voyage with instruments and chart

1930 Anchor Athol Bay

* Go through anchoring procedures

* Revision on cardinal marks

* Revision on lateral marks

* Revision on cardinal marks

* Revision on vessel lights

* Plot position by Chart and compass

* Plot position by radar

* Check position by GPS

2030 Depart Athol Bay

* Navigate by compass, GPS, radar, AIS and lookout
