As a graduate of the course you should be able to work safely as a General Purpose Hand (GPH) on commercial vessels operating in coastal and middle waters. A GPH assists the master and engineer in the functioning of the vessel.

Function

The TDM10107 Certificate 1 in Transport and Distribution (Maritime Operation) is for people wanting to enter the Maritime Sector of the Transport & Distribution Industry as a General Purpose Hand or Deckhand in marine service occupations.

Maritime Training School is a Nationally Recognised Training organisation with approval from ASQA and NSW Maritime.

Content

The General Purpose Hand Course is a competency based learning program.

The platform for the delivery TDM10107 Certificate I in Transport and Distribution is a blended delivery but it is centrally based as an e-learning course. This means approx 70% of the course will be delivered to you through our webinar sessions and online tools. There will also be some practical tasks to be undertaken and observed as well as the exam.

The practical session and exam for this deckhand qualification will be delivered as per your course schedule on-board our training vessel, Silver Spirit at Cabarita. If you live in an area where it is not possible to attend, we can make other arrangements to have your tasks and exam observed by a trainer in your area.

To participate in the delivery of this course you will need a computer with reliable internet access and you will also need some basic computer skills.

TDM10107 Certificate I in Transport and Distribution consists of 5 units:

 

· TDMME1107A Contribute to Effective Communication and Teamwork on a Coastal Vessel

· TDMMF5707A Assist in Safe Operations and Emergency Procedures on a Coastal Vessel

· TDMMR6007A Assist in Routine Deck Operations within the Limits of Responsibility of a General Purpose Hand

· TDMMF1007B Provide Elementary First Aid * Please note this unit is not delivered in this course and must be obtained prior to receiving your Course Completion Certificate. There is a list of external providers on this website.

 

As part of this course you will also learn nautical terminology, how to brief guests, crew and visitors on WHS, donning a life jacket, general vessel operations, participation in crew drills, how to respond in an emergency and mustering, how to identify risks and hazards, reporting replacing equipment if necessary, throwing lines, berthing and un-berthing vessels, tying a bowline, teamwork, observing standards in hygiene, how to deal with difficult people and resolving conflicts.

                                           

Course Cost and Regulations

$880 (including external pool based course, but excluding First Aid requirements)

NB. Students must be 15 years old or more to participate in this course. All GPH (deckhand) students must provide a Senior First Aid Certificate (TDMMF1007B – Provide elementary first aid) with more than 18 months validity before the Certificate 1 in Transport & Distribution (Maritime Operations) can be issued.
